Magazine Front Cover Analysis

The magazine cover is used to advertise the movie which is currently creating a large amount of hype. They are often dramatic and eyecatching in my opinion, this is designed to emphasize the movies main attributes such as the high level of CGI or the appearance of a new franchise, actor/actress or a comeback.

AVATAR

This is the magazine cover used to advertise Avatar in Empire movie magazine. I find that only the highest ranking movies appear here; this movie has an extreme aura of positivity surrounding it, quite literally we see that here, phrases which truly excentuate the movie, 'Epic', 'Movie event of the decade'  and 'Change cinema forever' create a large expectation. The image is dramatic and bold, the yellow and blue create a sense of fantasy and surrealism, which we appreciate as advanced CGI. It is clearly written in large font, 'James Cameron', (Director of Titanic) designed to appeal to his fans, as his movie titanic is the most successful movie ever made, the audience automatically thinks highly of the movie, increasing the sale of both the film and magazine.

Typically the magazine also includes website details, the issue number, the date, the masthead (logo), coverlines ('Plus massive Scorsese special') and the barcode.

In an article I found, it details the importance of visual literacy.

'Understanding how meaning is made in visual language is essential to producing effective image-based work'

The magazine cover is designed to be aesthitically pleasing. The main elements are the composition, lighting and framing, all of which are thought about and redone over and over again to improve imperfections. Part of what makes an advertisement affective is the reader being able to feel apart of the world being represented and relate to it. In the case of film, its being apart of the narrative.

'The aim of the game is to represent a desirable lifestyle'
